Headless is the “it” architecture of the world of Ecommerce at the moment.
Depending on what you read, it's either a must-have for reaching customers in today's fast-paced omnichannel world or a hot trend.
The truth is, it's probably somewhere in between. Headless commerce is not necessary for every e-commerce business. But for some brands that require more customization and creative solutions that can't be achieved with existing CMS, headless can be a saving grace.
The Headless means decoupling back-end Ecommerce functionality from the front-end customer (or “head”) touchpoints. The front-end and back-end can then share information transparently via APIs.
By going headless, a business might be able to choose a powerful commerce platform that doesn't perfectly meet its needs, then customize it using a separate content management system (CMS), a content management platform digital experience (DXP) or a progressive web app (PWA), among many other options.
